  • The reuse and recycling of End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) are not only an important tool in protecting the environment, but also a great way to increase the green economy nationally.

Research done by the Foundation on Auto Recycling takes a look at this interesting issue, with the aim of contextualizing recent trends, both nationally and in Europe, and the prospectives of this sector.

  • The Law 2000/53/CE states that Italy must recover 95% of ELVs, 85% of which must be destined to be recycled, by 2015. The published data show some good and bad points: "Italy is not in a bad position, but it is still lagging behind the European target and the more virtuous member states" says Edo Ronchi, "in regards to the European goal of recycling, in 2012, the latest available update, we were at 80.8%. We need another push to get to the 85% established by Europe as the 2015 goal". But it is in terms of energy efficiency that Italy falls the most behind. "To respect European Law, in 2015 less than 5% of ELVs in terms of weight should end up in landfills, but in 2012 it was still about 17-18%".

The research also includes a specific analysis of the Lazio company Italferro-Ecofer's plant and its systems, which is one of the most important companies in Italy in this sector as it manages about 10% of the national market.

In the last five years, the recycling industry linked to this plant invested about 3.4 million euro in environmental issues and has had some interesting results: from an environmental point of view, for every ton of scrap metal treated by the plant, about 660 kgCO2eq of greenhouse gas emission is avoided and more than 2,200 cubic meters of water is saved. In economic terms, the estimated value accrued for the nation, between 2007 and 2013, is approximately 276 million euro thanks to not having to import iron scrap.
